View RecordsLocate Hanover County criminal case information and request records from the proper clerk, with local contacts for General District and Circuit Court files.
| Question | Likely court | Official access path |
|---|---|---|
| Misdemeanor, traffic, many lower-court criminal matters | Hanover General District Court | Use Virginia’s general district criminal/traffic case information, then contact the traffic/criminal clerk when the online entry is not enough. |
| Felony prosecution, indictment, or appealed misdemeanor | Hanover Circuit Court | Use circuit case information when covered, then request the actual court file or copy from the Circuit Court Clerk. |
| Uncertain court level | Hanover County Court Case Information | Start from the county’s official routing page instead of assuming one database holds every criminal record. |
Virginia Case Status and Information provides statewide and locality-based access for general district criminal/traffic matters and select circuit courts. Search by the available identifiers, but use the result to capture the court, case number, hearing/disposition information, and party identity before requesting documents.
Coverage is not identical across every Virginia court. A missing online result can reflect court selection, system scope, name variation, or a case that requires clerk assistance. It should not be treated as a universal no-record determination.
The court page lists 804-365-6191 for Traffic/Criminal and the District Courts Building at 7530 County Complex Road, first floor.
The Circuit Court Clerk copy page directs court-file and transcript questions to 804-365-6151, with option 1 for criminal records.
For specifically identified records requested through the Circuit Clerk, the county currently states 50 cents per page plus $2 when certification is requested.
The Circuit Clerk page notes that some clerk records are exempt from ordinary Virginia FOIA treatment. Use the clerk’s court-record procedure for case documents.
Search the appropriate Virginia case-information system and capture the locality and court level.
Request the underlying case document from the clerk instead of relying only on a docket summary.
Ask whether the recipient requires a certified court copy and identify the exact document title or case number.
Do not assume a Hanover court search is a statewide criminal-history product; use the appropriate authorized statewide background-check route for that separate task.
Separate General District from Circuit Court using charge type, case information, or the county routing page.
Include full name and any known prior spelling, plus date of birth only through the office’s permitted process.
It is the most efficient way to identify the file and requested document.
Ask for the complaint, order, sentencing document, or other specific filing rather than “everything” when a narrower record answers the question.
A court case record answers what happened in that court file. It does not automatically prove that a person has no other Virginia cases, no federal case, or no out-of-state history. Likewise, an arrest is not the same as a conviction. For screening or compliance use, verify the final disposition in the case record and use any separate legally required background-check product for the intended purpose.
